NEW DELHI: Want a job full of fun and adventure? Try photography. It might just click. And all you need is an eye for aesthetic detail, the determination to pursue your dreams and of course, a bit of creativity. There are various institutes in Delhi that offer short and long-term courses in photography, including the Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF), Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Triveni Kala Sangam and Amity School of Communication.
And there's no dearth of subjects. Be it wildlife, fashion, photo portraits, still-life or mood photography, there are options galore as far as specialisation is concerned. Said A K Nair, executive director, PAF: "To become a successful photographer, one requires a thorough knowledge of cameras and the technicalities involved in taking pictures." All the courses provide hands-on training in professional photographic techniques, digital imaging and professional photographic business marketing. But what about job opportunities? They're plenty. As a photographer, you can work for newspapers, magazines, advertising agencies, fashion houses, photo division of various ministries and even big departmental stores. And if you want to do it alone, you can even freelance.
Said Ashish Bahl, a freelance photographer and an alumni of PAF: "As a freelancer, you have freedom. You can take any project that interests you." As far as remuneration goes, it all depends on the person's calibre. Generally, the photographers employed with fashion houses or ad agencies start with a monthly salary in the range of Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000. Freelance photographers can get anything between Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 per day. Established names earn even more. But, like every other profession, photography also has certain limitations. Said Nair: "Establishing oneself is no cakewalk and hence, many talented photographers remain amateurs.
The climb is hard and long and the financial returns, not very satisfactory in the beginning. Only those with a never-say-die attitude and real love for the medium hold on. They go on to become household names like Raghu Rai and Dayanita Singh". So what are you waiting for? Go and get clicking.
